ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS
manroland presented the ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS, a new sheetfed offset press, at IPEX 2010. Its signature feature is a speed of 18,000 sheets per hour for high-performance printing. Along with the ROLAND 700 HiPrint and ROLAND 700 DirectDrive series, this is the third model for a discriminating end-user market

The ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS – HS stands for High Speed – was developed for particularly efficient high volume offset printers who produce medium to long runs, generally at high printing speeds. Because it can process substrates up to 1 mm thick and is available with a host of inline finishing equipment for industrial-scale multicolor printing and eye-catching enhancement, plus seamless quality control, the ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS is especially beneficial for packaging printers.
Besides the packaging sector, industrial-scale publicity printers and general commercial printers with a suitable job structure are also classic target markets for the new ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS.
18,000 sheets per hour. The product name ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS stands for High Speed printing with 18,000 sheets per hour. This makes the HS press concept attractive for all areas of the printing industry where long runs are produced, regardless of the market segment and product type. The high speed has been achieved by, among other things, the new HS feeder with a suction head redesigned for improved vibration resistance, air control, sheet separation and sheet transfer, along with virtually continuous pile elevation control that provides flowing movements in the feeder area. The new HS delivery is equipped with the SelectDryer IR/TL Performance, a new dryer for even more efficient drying of inks and coatings. As always, production speed depends on the materials used such as substrate, ink, coating, and the print form.
QuickChange options. QuickChange comprises various technologies for reducing makeready times. QuickChange Air for example automates air settings in the feeder, printing units and delivery. QuickChange Job automatically adjusts the height of the gripper bars in the Transferters and infeed drum to the substrate thickness. QuickChange Wash is a rapid wash-up system for the inking roller train. With a special ink fountain coating, QuickChange Surface dramatically reduces the time needed for changing inks. Those are only a few of the QuickChange options.
New: autoprint smart. The ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS heralds the entry into One Touch press control: autoprint smart. The name stands for a package of options for greater production efficiency consisting of QuickChange Job, which is an automatic start-up sequence including preparation for the next job during production of the job on the press, self-learning ink slide presetting, and the network software products PressManager perfect and IntegrationPilot Plus. The package can be expanded with further options.
Larger sheet size. The ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS has a maximum sheet size of 740 x 1050 mm, which provides printers who work outside the DIN A formats (folding cartons, labels, books, etc.) with more space to maximize the number of multiple-up images or pages on a sheet.
QuickStart. The QuickStart press control is a standard feature that, following a stop, accelerates the press up to production speed before engaging the feeder. This achieves almost normal inking in the printing unit and avoids excessive substrate waste
Paper and carton. All manroland models from small format upwards are suitable for printing paper (commercial, publications and labels) and carton (packaging, folding cartons), and the ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS is no exception. It can process all substrate thicknesses between 0.04 and 1.0 mm. Optional equipment packages are available that simplify printing of lightweight paper, carton, foils, etc. and increase productivity.
UV and conventional. UV printing is one of the most dynamic growth areas in sheetfed offset. Fast drying (which permits the finishing operations to commence sooner), high surface gloss, and printing of non-absorbent substrates are among the benefits of the UV process. However, the press cannot always be fully utilized with UV jobs. In such cases manroland also offers for the ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS special equipment that permits alternating between conventional offset and UV offset operation.
Inline finishing. Many commercial or packaging printers want to cover a wide variety of market requirements with one press or as few presses as possible. This goes well beyond standard CMYK four-color printing and, besides print enhancement (coating, double coating, UV), also includes inline quality measuring and control, as well as sheet inspection and diversion. All these inline systems are available for the ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS.
FutureProof. Markets change over time. Customers as well and their product requirements. With a production machine that is specified once and then runs for many years, it is difficult to respond to these changes. The FutureProof concept from manroland gives investors a new option. They can make a selection from a wide range of additional equipment and install these as upgrades within five years of purchasing the press.
Inking and damping unit. The heart of a sheetfed offset press is the inking and damping unit. The ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS features high fidelity, fast and even ink transfer from prepress via the ink fountain and roller train to the printing plate. Ink distributor rollers, plate inking rollers and damping distributor rollers have a large oscillating stroke and counteract the formation of streaks or ghosting, especially important in packaging printing. As an option, the inking unit can be upgraded with QuickChange Color to reduce start-up waste. This option uses engagable roller pairs integrated in the inking unit.
Coating module. These days almost 100 percent of all packaging printing and more than 25 percent of all commercial and publications printing is coated. Coating quality is decisive for the overall impression of the product. Crucial factors here are the evenness and quality of the gloss and surface structure. Economy in coating consumption is important as well. manroland coating modules are mature, industry-proven units for inline application of water-based and/or UV coatings. The ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS is equipped with the new SelectDryer IR/TL Performance, an end-of-press coating dryer with innovative, high-performance hot air nozzles.
Sheet travel. Besides color reproduction and the coating film on the substrate, sheet travel is a major factor for print quality. It must ensure that the surface is not scratched or smeared and that the sheet is not bent at the corners or creased. manroland is a pioneer in the design of Transferter technology that provides contact-free sheet transfer between the printing units. This principle is also used for the ROLAND 700 HiPrint HS and has been further refined for high-speed printing.
